Study reveals many in the UK are suffering from sleep issues

A study of Google searches across each city in the UK has shown that a large proportion of the population are concerned about or experience sleep issues.

If you’ve recently googled “sleep apnea”, “insomnia” or “restless leg syndrome”, you are not alone. In fact, a recent study carried out by Bed Kingdom, the UK bedroom furnishing company, indicates that you have at least 90,000 others to keep you company.

It appears that many among the UK public are suffering from sleep issues, based on an analysis which focused on the Google searches relating to sleep in each UK city. While sleep is supposed to be the time to relax and let go of the day’s stresses, for some, it is a whole new stressor in itself.

Sleep apnea ranked as the most searched for issue in the UK with an average of 147,253 Google searches each month. Sleep apnea, which is estimated to affect 10 million people nationwide, is a medical condition which causes one to stop and start breathing throughout the night.

Other high-ranking searches included insomnia, restless legs syndrome (RLS), sleep paralysis, narcolepsy and bruxism.

Ashley Ainsworth of Bed Kingdom noted that “while stress is a significant factor, it's essential to recognise that sleep disorders can have diverse origins, from alcohol consumption to the type of bed you sleep in. Overlooking this fact could lead to missed underlying health issues. It's important to seek professional advice and treatment if you suffer from any of the sleep conditions mentioned in this study”.
